Annual Island Events

• On 14 May 1942, the antisubmarine trawler HMS Bedfordshire was torpedoed and sunk with all hands lost off Ocracoke Island. Four bodies of the crew were subsequently found and buried on the Island. The well-tended graveyard, the "British Cemetery", later was ceded to the British government. Each May (this year, the 9th) there are memorial services with representatives of the several involved navies participating. In Rupert Brooke's words, "If I should die think only this of me, that there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England."

• The annual Ocracoke Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament (OISFT), fun to watch, will be 3-5 May.

• The Ocrafolk Festival, with lots of entertainment, crafts and good fun, will be 6-8 June.

• Plan ahead for your 4th of July holiday on Ocracoke! A grand parade with lots of floats, a sand sculpture contest, classic car show and evening fireworks over the water- fun for all!
